Must try eats in Rome, Italy

DAY 1

We’ve finally reached Rome and they weren’t kidding when they said you can do it in a day. During our Europe trip, we were able to explore Rome, Italy. Here are some highlights along with food suggestions.

Waking up from a long train ride, we’ve arrived in Rome! After we checked into our Airbnb, we went on a hunt for some food. It was at a weird time where it’s too late for lunch and too early for dinner. If you plan on visiting Rome, I highly recommend finding a place to sleep in Trastevere, a bohemian and indie location filled with people, culture and vines.

It was a 5-minute walk from our Airbnb where we grabbed chicken cacciatore sandwiches, supplies and hot cappuccinos. Trapizzino was a hidden spot in Trastevere located beside a laundromat and it had great WiFi for Akeel and I both to play Pokemon Go.

After some exploring, we headed to La Cantina Dei Papi. This spot is unique because since they weren’t legally allowed to be called a restaurant, we had to pick up our orders from the pickup counter. This was our first charcuterie board in all of Europe. Akeel and I were so excited to dig in. We bought a charcuterie board for two with a porchetta sandwich as a side. The sandwich was delicious and everything on this board was fully eaten. Probably the best charcuterie board I’ve ever had.

DAY 2

When I tell you day 2 of Rome was painful, I’m not exaggerating. I have eczema and we travelled here in the summer of 2019. If you can imagine, the sweat makes everything worse, but I was able to trek along and try my best to enjoy the scenery.

We lined up to take a photo of the infamous Mouth of Truth. We walked along a path visiting the Colosseum, the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Roman Forum, Piazza Venezia and the Spanish Steps.

It’s time for lunch and we went to Piccolo Arancio. We ordered a grilled artichoke to have an authentic Roman meal. Our main dishes were cacio e pepe, which is native to the city and rigatoni carbonara. Cacio e pepe means cheese and pepper and this dish is on my list of things I want to recreate.

For dessert, we went to a staple gelato restaurant called Venchi and ordered fior d’latte gelato and citrus sorbet.

With a long-needed rest at our Airbnb, we were off to visit where Julius Caesar was assassinated because it held a sanctuary for stray cats. A couple minutes from this spot was a Roman pizza restaurant that served one of the most delicious Roman pizzas I’ve ever had: Pizzeria Florida. There were so many options to choose from and so many different places I wanted to go to, so we only ordered two slices of the margherita with bufala cheese.

We also stopped by Pizza Trilussa for carbonara pizza recommended by the person who works there.

DAY 3

 We did Rome in a day and now we need to recover. We needed to do some house keeping things since we were already in the middle of our trip, we spent it doing our laundry and going to the pharmacy to grab medication for my eczema.

We ate more Roman pizza at Pizza Trilussa and grabbed their prosciutto bufala and potato mozza. We grabbed Maritozzo at II Maritozzaro. We ended the night with a cute dinner date at Osteria da Fortunata. I got the delicious pesto fettuccine dish while Akeel got a red sauce dish (I don’t remember the specifics). For dessert, I had my first authentic tiramisu and panna cotta.

There was so much to do in Rome, but our night had to end to leave for Florence. Stay tuned for my next post about Florence dishes.
